BlueCat provides a platform for DDI: the combined management layer for DNS, DHCP and IP address management. BlueCat Address Manager centralises configuration and works alongside existing open-source servers such as BIND and ISC DHCP. A REST API enables integration with Ansible, Terraform and ServiceNow.
BlueCat Address Manager: DDI as a single data model
DDI treats DNS, DHCP and IPAM as a single, integrated layer. BlueCat Address Manager (BAM) is the central platform: configuration changes are rolled out from BAM to underlying servers, regardless of whether these are BlueCat DNS/DHCP Servers (BDDS), BIND instances or Kea servers.
Creating a new subnet automatically generates the corresponding DNS zones and DHCP scopes. This reduces the likelihood of inconsistencies between the three management layers, which pose a structural risk in separately managed environments.
Integration with existing open-source infrastructure
BlueCat does not replace BIND or ISC DHCP, but adds a management layer on top of the existing servers. Existing configurations are incorporated into BAM; the servers remain operational. A phased migration is possible: locations or domains can be incorporated one by one without migrating the entire network at once.
BlueCat Gateway offers a REST API for automation via Ansible, Terraform or custom scripts. This allows the provisioning of a new server to create a DNS record and a DHCP reservation without the need for manual intervention.
When is BlueCat a good fit?
BlueCat is relevant for enterprise environments and service providers that manage multiple DNS and DHCP servers. Without centralised control, organisations face configuration drift, unsynchronised zone transfers and IPAM management that lags behind reality.
