Our vendor Edgecore Networks

Edgecore Networks supplies white-box network hardware without
any proprietary network software. Switches are compatible with SONiC, OcNOS and RTBrick; access points support the Telecom Infra Project’s OpenWifi standard. Distri X distributes Edgecore products and provides advice on hardware selection and network operating system (NOS) combinations.

White-box switching: hardware independent of software

Edgecore is part of Accton Technology and manufactures switching hardware for data centre fabrics and carrier aggregation networks. The hardware is built on Broadcom Trident and Tomahawk silicon for data centre use and Broadcom Jericho silicon for carrier-grade routing functions.

The hardware comes with ONIE (Open Network Install Environment), the open-source bootloader that enables the loading of an external NOS. Compatible operating systems include SONiC, IP Infusion’s OcNOS and RTBrick for carrier BNG functions. This makes the hardware and software fully interchangeable.

OpenWifi access points

Edgecore supplies access points that support the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) OpenWifi standard. OpenWifi separates the AP firmware from the cloud management platform, allowing hardware and management software to be selected and replaced independently of one another.

The EAP102 and EAP104 are compatible with several OpenWifi cloud controllers. This enables operators offering Wi-Fi as a managed service to upgrade their hardware without having to migrate their management platform.

When is Edgecore a good fit?

Edgecore is of interest to integrators and operators who wish to select hardware and network software independently of one another. In data centre fabrics, it offers an alternative to proprietary switching. In service provider environments, the Jericho-based platforms form the basis for software-defined BNG functions in combination with RTBrick.

Our partnership with Edgecore Networks

Distri X distributes Edgecore Networks. We advise on hardware selection based on silicon, port density and NOS compatibility, and pair the hardware with the right network software. Would you like to know which combination is right for your network? We’d be happy to help you find the right solution.
