Genie Networks provides GenieATM, a platform for network traffic analysis based on NetFlow, sFlow and IPFIX data. It analyses traffic patterns by interface, AS number and
prefix, and detects volumetric DDoS attacks through behavioural analysis. Distri X distributes Genie Networks products and provides support with sizing and implementation.
GenieATM: traffic analysis and BGP insights
GenieATM (Autonomous Traffic Management) analyses network traffic data exported by routers and switches. NetFlow (Cisco), sFlow (Broadcom) and IPFIX (the standardised version) are the most common export formats. The platform provides an overview of traffic distribution by peer, transit, customer and protocol.
AS numbers identify networks on the internet; BGP (Border Gateway Protocol) determines how traffic is routed between them. GenieATM makes traffic shifts following BGP changes immediately visible, which is relevant for peering decisions and fault analysis.
DDoS detection and mitigation
GenieATM detects volumetric DDoS attacks using statistical thresholds. Upon detection, the platform can automatically activate mitigation measures, such as BGP blackholing: the target’s IP address is advertised via BGP with a specific community, so that attack traffic is discarded at network level before it reaches the infrastructure.
Operators can also redirect traffic to an external scrubbing environment. GenieATM manages the activation process.
When is Genie Networks a good fit?
Genie Networks is relevant for ISPs, carriers and hosting providers who wish to combine traffic visibility and DDoS protection in a single platform. The reporting functions can also be used for capacity planning and invoicing based on measured traffic volumes per customer or peering link.
