Our vendor Lanner
Lanner supplies x86-based network devices for running virtualised network functions. The hardware differs from standard servers in that it includes network-specific features: bypass cards for fail-open scenarios and hardware acceleration for IPsec via Intel QuickAssist Technology. Distri X distributes Lanner products and provides advice on platform selection.
Network appliance hardware for virtualised functions
NFV (Network Functions Virtualisation) replaces proprietary network equipment with software that runs on standard x86 hardware: routers, firewalls and load balancers as VNFs (Virtual Network Functions) on a single platform. Lanner supplies the hardware on which this software runs.
Bypass cards are relevant for inline security applications. If the device fails or restarts, the bypass allows the network path to continue without any traffic being blocked. This is an essential requirement for environments where equipment failure must not cause any service interruption.
uCPE: multiple functions in a single device
uCPE (Universal Customer Premises Equipment) combines routing, firewall, SD-WAN and monitoring as separate VNFs on a single hardware platform at the customer’s premises. Service providers offering managed SD-WAN services deploy uCPE to replace multiple individual devices at branch locations.
The NCA (Network Computing Appliances) series comprises form factors ranging from compact desktop units for branch offices to 1U rack-mounted devices for data centre locations.
When is Lanner a good fit?
Lanner is relevant for service providers that deliver managed network or security services via uCPE, and for enterprises that wish to run virtualised network functions on specialised hardware. The combination of high I/O density, bypass and crypto acceleration makes Lanner suitable for environments where both availability and performance are critical.
Our partnership with Lanner
Distri X distributes Lanner products. We advise on choosing the right platform based on computing power, the number of interfaces, form factor and the software stack that needs to run on it. Would you like to know which Lanner platform suits your use case? We’re happy to help you find a solution.
