StorMagic provides SvSAN, a software-defined storage layer that offers high availability across two nodes via data mirroring and a lightweight witness. SvSAN runs as a virtual appliance on VMware vSphere, KVM and Hyper-V. Distri X distributes StorMagic and provides support with pre-sales and sizing.
SvSAN: high-availability storage across two nodes
SvSAN (Simplified vSAN) is installed as a virtual appliance on the existing hypervisor. Storage is mirrored between two nodes; if one node fails, the other takes over the entire storage load.
A lightweight witness component prevents a split-brain scenario: a situation in which two nodes lose connection and both believe they are the primary node. The witness acts as a tiebreaker. It runs as a small VM or as a separate hardware appliance. SvSAN does not require any specific storage controllers or SAN hardware; standard x86 servers are sufficient.
SvKMS: centralised key management
StorMagic also provides SvKMS (Simplified Key Management Server) for the centralised management of cryptographic keys. SvKMS manages encryption keys for storage encryption and TPM attestation. For environments seeking to combine end-to-end encryption with centralised key management, SvKMS complements the SvSAN storage layer.
When is StorMagic a good fit?
StorMagic is suitable for environments where high availability is required but a storage cluster comprising three or more nodes is not feasible. Retail outlets, industrial sites and healthcare facilities with two servers per location are typical use cases. Following the changes to VMware licensing, SvSAN is also being used as a storage layer in combination with an alternative hypervisor.
